The Roeckl ROECK-GRIP WINTER is the winter version of the well-known ROECK-GRIP. Roeckl lists ROECK-GRIP® laminated for this model, on both the back of the hand and the palm, with an easy closure. Designed for riders who keep riding through the cold months and want to stay with the same material. At Maddelin in black and white in sizes 6 to 11 with half sizes, and in navy in size 7.5.
About these riding gloves
If you are used to the standard ROECK-GRIP and do not want to switch gloves in January, this is the model you will end up with. Roeckl places the ROECK-GRIP WINTER in the same material family: ROECK-GRIP® laminated on the back of the hand and in the palm. Roeckl itself describes the ROECK-GRIP material as breathable, stretchy and supple, and says it fits like a second skin. Laminated means it is bonded to an extra layer; Roeckl does not say which layer that is. Roeckl does not publish fibre percentages for this model either, and the composition is on the label inside the glove.
There is one difference from the standard ROECK-GRIP that you need to know before buying: Roeckl lists no touchscreen compatibility for the ROECK-GRIP WINTER, whereas the standard ROECK-GRIP does have that feature. If you want to use your phone in the cold without taking the glove off, the Weldon is a winter model in the Roeckl range at Maddelin that Roeckl does list as touchscreen compatible. The only feature Roeckl records for the ROECK-GRIP WINTER is the easy closure.
The second decision point in the winter range is the material itself. The ROECK-GRIP WINTER stays with ROECK-GRIP®, while the Weldon is made in Polartec® Power Stretch® Pro and also has COMFORT-CUT, a SILICONE-GRIP and reflective design elements. If you want reflective details or a silicone grip, choose the Weldon; if you want to stay with ROECK-GRIP® in winter, the ROECK-GRIP WINTER. At Roeckl, both run from size 6 to 11.
In the competition arena it is mainly the colour that counts. Gloves are compulsory in dressage: internationally in white, off-white or the colour of your jacket, and Paardensport Vlaanderen specifies white, buff or the colour of the jacket. So white always works, navy only if your jacket is navy. Black is not listed as a separate colour in that international dressage list, whereas it is explicitly permitted in the eventing dressage test. In showjumping and cross-country, gloves are not compulsory and there is no colour requirement. In driving they are compulsory, for the groom as well, and in winter that is a reason for a second pair. Under the LRV they are optional, with white preferred in dressage. Rules differ by federation, discipline, level and country and change regularly, so check the current rules of your own federation before you enter.
Of this model, Roeckl writes that it delivers precise grip and refined rein feel. In its sizing advice, the manufacturer adds that a riding glove should fit like a second skin, because you hold the rein with sensitivity; that applies just as much to the winter version.
